Get Sober with Stephen Hawking

One time when I checked myself into detox – which means I had run out of money for alcohol, but also recognized that I needed some help – and my father bought and brought me an illustrated copy of The Illustrated A Brief History of Time / The Universe in a Nutshell – Two Books in One“>A Brief History of Time & The Universe in a Nutshell. Both books were bound together, and with the pictures to help me understand the information, those books changed my life. Deep into my alcoholism at that point, I found true and logical solace in the writing of Stephen Hawking. I often tell people “I don’t believe in god, but I do believe in Stephen Hawking” [I really do tell people that quite often].

For some reason, the knowledge that I am but a speck in our great universe became a strong motivator for me stop drinking. I was also listening to a lot of ASMR videos, and I was taking steps by seeking help from professionals. At one point in…I think 2014, I checked myself into an outpatient rehab program, and I was the only person in the class who was not subjugated to be there by a court of law. The class I never finished, but I did maintain 7 months sober from alcohol after I left the class, so it definitely made an impact. The reason I stopped going to the class was because I was continuing to smoke cannabis, and although I would make a valiant effort not to show up to the program stoned, I still didn’t feel like I was bringing good vibes to the meetings [think 8 people in a small room – much smaller than an AA meeting], and so I elected to stop going. Because I stopped going insurance did not cover the class, but I learned a lot, and I am forever glad I took that class.

That was then, and this is now. The reason I brought that up is because Raffy says at the beginning of today’s Video Of The Day, that he just read A Brief History of Time, and, well, I found reading that book to be a really efficient way of fighting the urge to drink. Honest to Hawking! The knowledge I gained from that book helped to propel my motivation for months. Another good read, if you are trying to fight the urge to drink, is Harry Potter. I’m not joking about that either. You may not want to read, but is it not better than reaching for the bottle?

The Pink Pouch. Isn’t that also a diamond? I’m kidding.

At twenty-four minutes in length I believe today’s video is a strong choice for individuals who are choosing to fight the urge to drink or use drugs by watching ASMR. I suppose it also plays into account that the body of an alcoholic is likely a tired body, and that is just another reason I believe ASMR has positioned itself to be one of the largest free tools for recovering addicts. There are some videos on YouTube about overcoming alcoholism and addiction, but I believe once members of the ASMR Community begin to create content geared specifically for individuals in recovery, those recovering individuals will come in droves.

Alcoholics Anonymous is simply a support group. From what I have been researching, individuals have a much higher chance of overcoming there addictions when they are presented with different paths for recovery. Cognitive Therapy and Behavioral Therapy are two options for recovering addicts, and although those therapies have been around for a long time, only recently has addiction been viewed as a symptom instead of a problem, and I am just so happy about that. There is no shame in therapy, but in order to be seeking that level of help you must posses admittance as well. No one will judge you for solving your problem, but will they reserve the same if you keep drinking?

Some people drink because they are sad, some people drink because they are happy. I drank because I was bored. If you think you can’t regret the choices you make when your bored, I’m living proof that that just isn’t true. When I began to travel is when my addictions began to fade, and now I understand that to be because I was less board.

Everyday Sobriety Advice

I am a recovered alcoholic/drug addict, but I am not a qualified addiction counselor. To help other alcoholics/addicts achieve sobriety, I have created the mantra’s below. Although I call them “steps,” I believe that all four mantra’s should be recited in concurrence.

When the urge to drink alcohol or use drugs comes upon you, I suggest reciting these four steps, and then implementing an activity to “kill time” until your urge to use drugs/alcohol is less intense. I suggest you use ASMR videos to “kill time”

Good luck, My Friend

Below are the steps of admittance required for using The ASMR.Community Sobriety Program [ACSP] successfully.

Step 1: “Sobriety is a choice, and it is up to me to make the right choice.”

Step 2: “Not everybody will be able to achieve sobriety, but that knowledge does not prevent my success regarding sobriety.”

Step 3: “The urge to imbibe (substances that I know will prevent my success) is finite. Sometimes the urge will exist, sometimes the urge will not exist.”

Step 4: “Sobriety is not the same for everyone. Success is.”

I believe the steps I listed above are a complete, non-exclusionary list of all mental admissions needed to achieve your goals regarding sobriety.

Everybody’s definition of sobriety is different, but everybody’s definition of success is the same.

I mostly work with the application of ASMR, but there is a whole lot more to ASMR than using it to gain sobriety or fall asleep, including the history and the science of it.
